A Scientist Explains Why You Should Drink on the First Date

You might think the ideal first date activity would be extravagant, like a fancy dinner, or something romantic, like a walk on the beach. Or if you've been watching The Bachelorette, you might think extreme sports are the way to go.

But actually, according to biological anthropologist Helen Fisher, the most scientifically sound first date is way more simple: Getting a drink. “By having a mixed drink, you’re going to end up being more social, more talkative, and showing more of who you are,” Fisher told The Washington Post.. Not only does drinking provide social lubrication, it also sets up a high potential for bonding.

A recent survey by the dating site Plenty of Fish confirms Fisher's theory: The couples most likely to have a serious relationship after connecting on the site met over dinner, coffee, drinks, or a walk. What makes these dates effective is that they put the main focus on the person, not the activity.

Fisher told The Washington Post that drinks trump dinner because they require less commitment. “The first date really should be just for cocktails, because you really shouldn’t invest a lot of money or time. It’s a look-see,” she says. If you're feeling it, you can order another round. But if not, you can politely exit the scene.

Maybe, then, it's best to save restaurants for the second date.
